I call you gladiators because that is exactly what you are.

That is you. In the arena. Facing the challenges. Taking the hits.

And over these next three days, I am not here as your critic. I am jumping into the arena with you.

The Confession

But first, I need to make a confession:

I have been where we all spend time. Stuck, frustrated, looking for that ONE breakthrough that could change everything. That was just last week. I joke, but...

For years, I was trapped in what I now call the "BBB cycle": Bullshit, Begging, and Badgering.

THE DESCENT INTO THE HOLE

Let me take you back to where my journey began, not to brag about accomplishments (Lauralouise will cover those), but to show you the hole I fell into.

The Finance Bro Dream Turned Nightmare

Picture this: I am running a major international investment business. On paper, I am successful. Living on first class, managing billions, boats, the works. The classic finance bro dream.

But here is what no one saw: every Monday morning, I would feel this knot in my stomach. That dread of having to chase the next investor, make the next pitch, play the game by someone else's rules.

I was doing what the industry said I should: cold calls, endless meetings with gatekeepers who would "get back to me," fancy pitch decks full of statistical porn that no one actually read.

The Hotel Okura Moment

I remember sitting in the Hotel Okura, my favorite Tokyo hotel, one night at 3 AM, jetlagged beyond belief, staring at a pitchbook I had spent weeks perfecting.

I realized something profound: I hated this. And worse, it was not even working that well.

The traditional client acquisition model was soul-crushing. I was playing by rules designed for the mediocre middle, not for visionaries like us that want more.

It was push marketing, begging for attention, BS'ing to get in the door and badgering them for money.

The Crash

And then came the crash, both literal and figurative. 2008 hit our industry like a tsunami. Half our investors pulled out. Partners jumped ship. The model that barely worked in good times completely failed in bad ones.

Rock Bottom in East Croydon

I found myself in London, at the monthly board meeting where I pitched a new vision.

The chairman's response? "Stupid idea Anric. We don't entertain dilettantes here, Anric."

Had to look up what "dilettante" meant, but I got the message: sit down, shut up, stay in your lane.

That was my rock bottom. The deepest part of the hole. It also happened to be in East Croydon, a total shithole part of London that I never ever want to go back to.

But here is the truth about holes: they give you perspective. My grandfather always had this saying: when you are in a hole, stop digging. But the truth is, when you are down there, you can either keep digging or look up and see a different path.

THE EPIPHANY & CLIMB

My epiphany did not come as a lightning bolt. It was more like water slowly filling the hole, lifting me up day by day.

I realized the traditional capital-raising model was not just broken for me. It was broken for everyone. The industry was stuck in the dark ages of BBB.

The Dangerous Questions

I began asking dangerous questions:

  • What if I could attract investors instead of chasing them?
  • What if my authentic story was more powerful than any pitch deck?
  • What if I built a system that worked for ME, aligned with MY strengths?

These questions led me to create what I now call the SSSS Framework: Strategy, Story, System, and Sustenance.

The Four Pillars of My Climb

1. Strategy

First, I completely redesigned my Strategy. Instead of trying to be all things to all investors, I got ruthlessly specific about who my Right-Fit Clients were.

I stopped chasing everyone with a checkbook and started focusing only on those who aligned with my vision.

Nugget #7: "Macro clear = micro easy. Get the big picture right, and the details fall into place. Strategy leads, always."

When I switched from "How can I get their money?" to "How can I serve this specific type of investor?" everything changed.

2. Story

Next came my Story. I threw out the standard finance bro narrative and embraced my messy, unconventional journey. The hijackings in Africa, the wins, the failures, all of it.

Nugget #5: "Great ideas don't change the world, great stories do. We tell stories because they make people feel something so that they will do something."

And something miraculous happened: investors started listening. Not just listening, leaning in. They were not buying my returns; they were buying into ME and my vision.

3. System

Then, I built a System to scale this approach. No more random networking events or cold calls. I created a methodical process for getting my story in front of the right people, nurturing relationships, and converting prospects into raving fans who brought others.

4. Sustenance

But the real game-changer was Sustenance, the fuel that kept it all running. The mindset work, the community of fellow gladiators, the vision that pulled me forward even on the hardest days.

Within 18 months of implementing this framework, we raised more capital than in the previous five years combined.

And more importantly, I actually enjoyed the process.
